I am investigating using MapForce for Edi Mapping and am finding things very confusing. I'd like to map from a flat file format to edi, and also from edi to a flat file format and to automate these processes. What's the minimum I would need in order to do this? (The automation can be done elsewhere, but the map needs to run and map the data.)

Depends on what you mean by automation. You want to run your mapping via the command line or API? Then you need MapForce Server as well. Do you have more complex workflow automation requirements? Then FlowForce Server may be worth a look.
In general, mapping automation solutions are described in the documentation under Automating Mappings and MapForce.
