Getting Started

Home Prev Top Next

This topic describes broad procedures that can help you get started with DatabaseSpy.

1.Connect to a data source in the Add a Data Source dialog. It is also possible to connect to a data source at a later stage via the toolbar. You can also select a global resource when a new data source is created.

2.Browse the Project window to view project objects. Add files and data sources to the project if necessary.

3.Configure the properties of different objects in the Properties pane. You can view properties by selecting objects in the Project, Online Browser, and Design Editor.

4.Interact with the Online Browser to get an overview of objects available in the connected database. The Online Browser serves as a starting point for most database actions:

•Retrieving and editing data

•Creating SQL statements (which are then displayed in the SQL Editor)

•Showing the row count for tables

•Controlling the layout of database objects

•Filtering database objects by name

•Adding frequently used database objects to your favorites

•Modifying tables, columns, and keys (if supported by your vendor)

•Exporting data from a selected table to XML, CSV, HTML, and Excel 2007 or later

5.Use the SQL Editor to perform the following actions:

•Creating, displaying and editing SQL statements

•Executing SQL statements

•Navigating between SQL statements

•Formatting and refactoring SQL statements

•Exporting database data to XML, CSV, HTML, and Excel 2007 or later

•Configuring SQL editing options

6.Observe the Message window to see the outcome of SQL statement execution.

7.Use the Result window to observe and analyze results, find, add, edit, copy, paste, and delete data. DatabaseSpy Enterprise Edition also supports generating charts.

8.Save the project.

In addition to the Online Browser and SQL Editor, you can also manipulate database objects in the Design Editor. The Design Editor enables you to:

•View database objects and their relationships graphically

•Add and modify database objects visually
