WebDAV Overview

WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) is a standardized set of extensions to the HTTP protocol (the basis of the World Wide Web) that allows users to collaboratively edit and manage files on remote Web servers.

WebDAV has widespread vendor support in the industry and is used with many browsers, editors, file systems, document repositories, and databases. The use of a WebDAV enabled client (such as XMLSpy® 2010) in conjunction with a WebDAV enabled server changes the way users interact with the World Wide Web. While today the Web is largely a read-only resource, WebDAV has the potential to transform the Internet into a fully writeable medium capable of supporting collaboration and distributed file sharing.

XMLSpy® 2010 implements the WebDAV client interface in the Project Menu, allowing you to mount external web folders and add external files to your project from any Web server, database, or file system accessible through HTTP, WebDAV, or FTP.

You may add files or URLs to a project and/or save the files directly back to the originating Web server, database or file system.

XMLSpy also includes tight integration with SharePoint Server, allowing you to read and write XML files from the CMS with full check in / check out capabilities. Learn more on the XMLSpy SharePoint page.

XMLSpy® 2010 and Authentic® 2010 support Delta-V, an extension to the WebDAV protocol that enables check-in/check-out functionality when used in conjunction with a WebDAV server. This supports XML content editing in a truly collaborative, distributed environment such as the Web. This functionality is accessed from the XMLSpy® 2010  Project Window.
