XMLSpy: Advanced XML Text View

XMLSpy® 2008 includes an advanced XML text view that makes XML documents easy to navigate and edit, thereby accelerating development projects.

Powerful editing views

The five powerful, synchronized editing views of the Altova XMLSpy® 2008 XML development environment are designed to allow developers to work with XML technologies in the mode that best suits their specific needs, allowing ease-of-use and rapid, high-quality development. The XMLSpy® 2008 design pane includes view tabs that allow immediate switching between the different views.

Serious software coders will appreciate the robust, intelligent XML editing features of Advanced Text View, including code completion, entry helpers, line numbers, source folding, a built-in XML validation and well-formedness checker, a find-in-files window, and more.

Advanced Text View

Text View remains the most popular editing view of XMLSpy® 2008, and we continue to add new features to facilitate XML development. For developers creating XML-based Web sites, Advanced Text View even includes a full-featured CSS editor.

NEW XMLSpy 2008r2 contains a number of advanced optimizations for working with very large files. These result in a reduction of memory consumption by up to 75-80% compared to the previous version when opening and validating XML documents in Text View. This means that you can now open and work with files that are about 4-5 times larger than those supported in the past.* Enhanced support for large files is especially helpful for developers working with large amounts of data in the context of database applications, financial services, data gathering, enterprise data integration, and so on.

Previously, editing XML files in a text format could easily result in unbalanced brackets, elements that were not closed properly, or other violations of the well-formedness principle. The XMLSpy® 2008 code completion functionality helps you avoid these problems by automatically completing the element, as well as inserting all required attributes, as soon as you type the closing bracket on your keyboard. The cursor is then positioned between the start and end tag of the element so that you can easily continue to add child elements or content. Available elements, attributes, and entities as specified by the XML Schema are also selectable from context-sensitive drop down menus and entry helper windows on the XMLSpy® 2008 desktop.

Line numbering allows for easy file navigation and correlation to XSLT error messages, and you can go directly to any line and character number using a button on the XMLSpy® 2008 toolbar. Bookmarking lets you set points of reference in the text that you can jump back to at any time. Bookmarks are displayed in the margin adjacent to the line numbers.

Source folding lets you expand and collapse portions of a file, taking advantage of the hierarchical structure of XML to present your document in a neat and orderly manner. Indentation guides show the logical links between corresponding opening and closing element tags within the file.

Another useful feature of advanced text view is the pretty-print button, which reformats your XML document by indenting opening and closing element tags so that the layout reflects the structure of the document. Pretty printing makes it easier for the human eye to scan the XML markup and edit the XML document.

The advanced text view also supports multi-lingual spell checking for English (British, US, Canadian), German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Dutch, Swedish, and other languages. It also includes separate English language medical and legal dictionaries.

Other Editing Views

In addition to Advanced Text View, XMLSpy® 2008 includes four other sychronized editing views, and the design pane allows you to switch back and forth between views at any time.

Modeling of advanced data or Web service interfaces is easy with XML Schema Design / WSDL View, which enables intuitive, visual design and editing for the most advanced XML interfaces. You can work with XML data as you would in a spreadsheet or database application using Enhanced Grid View, a powerful tabular view for performing XML editing operations on the document as a whole, instead of line-by-line.

Browser View is included for previewing HTML output, and XMLSpy® 2008 also provides a built-in Authentic® View to allow developers to create customized views and data input forms, so that business users can edit any class of XML document without having to posses an in-depth technical knowledge of XML.
