XMLSpy: Grid View

XMLSpy® 2008 includes an enhanced XML grid view for performing XML editing operations on a document as a whole, instead of line-by-line.

Powerful Editing Views

The five powerful, synchronized editing views of the Altova XMLSpy® 2008 XML development environment are designed to allow developers to work with XML technologies in the mode that best suits their specific needs, allowing ease-of-use and rapid, high-quality development. The XMLSpy® 2008 design pane includes view tabs that allow immediate switching between the different views.

Enhanced Grid View

The Enhanced XML Grid View of XMLSpy® 2008 shows the hierarchical structure of any XML-compliant document through a set of nested containers. These can be easily expanded and collapsed to get a clear picture of the document's tree-like structure.

Unlike any other tool, XMLSpy® 2008 allows you to directly manipulate your document in this hierarchical view using advanced drag-and-drop and intelligent editing functions.

Grid View

The Enhanced Grid View also includes database/table view, which automatically detects sequences of repeating elements and rearranges the presentation to show these elements in a tabular fashion. The tabular view is a well-known paradigm that resembles database- or spreadsheet-like applications. XMLSpy® 2008 achieves this database/table view by taking the respective attributes and sub-elements of the repeating element and showing them as columns in the table.

Table View

The database/table view is fully integrated with the Enhanced Grid View, and you can switch between both presentation forms for each element at will. Editing in the table view is supported through advanced drag-and-drop and intelligent editing functions, and you can work with XML data as you would in a spreadsheet or database application.

For easy data exchange with other applications, you can select elements in the table and simply copy/paste them directly into Microsoft Access or Excel. This feature works both ways, allowing you to easily copy data from any spreadsheet-like application into XMLSpy® 2008.

When searching for or replacing data in grid view, the find and replace commands offer the flexibility to restrict your search by elements, attributes, or text, and also specify the usual case-sensitivity and whole-word options.

Find/replace functionality

For more complex data exchange tasks, XMLSpy® 2008 also offers a set of unique conversion utilities, which allow you to import/export XML data from any text file, Word document, or database.

Other Editing Views

In addition to Enhanced Grid View, XMLSpy® 2008 includes four other sychronized editing views, and the design pane allows you to switch back and forth between views at any time.

The Advanced Text View makes designing and editing XML documents easy with intelligent XML editing features such as code completion, line numbers, source folding, a built-in XML validation and well-formedness checker, and more. Modeling of advanced data or Web Services interfaces is simplified with XML Schema Design / WSDL View, which enables intuitive, visual design and editing for the most advanced XML interfaces.

Browser View is included for previewing HTML output, and XMLSpy® 2008 also provides a built-in Authentic View to allow developers to create customized views and data input forms, so that business users can edit any class of XML document without having to posses an in-depth technical knowledge of XML.
