The XML project management features of XMLSpy® 2008 are easy-to-use time savers that allow you to group files into projects and manage related documents quickly and easily.

Organize Files and URLs

The XMLSpy project management features allow you to group your files and frequently used URLs into logical folders of any arbitrary structure.

The folders may correspond to actual directories on your file system, or you can define file-type extensions for each folder so that common files are kept together in one convenient place. The project folders are virtual folders and do not need to correspond to any hierarchical organization of the files on your hard disk.

You can also assign different XSL transformation parameters to each folder and have the same physical file be contained in more than one project folder. This is especially useful when you want to keep your data in one XML file and use different XSL stylesheets to produce different output (e.g., separate HTML and WML presentations).

Along similar lines, you may also want to assign different DTDs or schemas to different folders, thereby being able to validate a file against both a DTD and an XML Schema without changing the file itself. This is very useful when you are in the process of making the transition from DTD to XML Schema.

Add Active and Related Files

If you have just received or downloaded a new XML document, you can automatically add the active file and all related files to the project. XMLSpy® 2008 uses its integrated parser to automatically locate any schema, DTD, or external entity reference and then adds all related files or URLs to the project.

If you have designated different file-types for different folders, XMLSpy® 2008 even automatically puts the newly found files in their proper folder location.You can, of course, also simply add any single file or group of files using the "Browse" dialog.

Find-in-files

XMLSpy® 2008 provides an advanced find-in-files window for performing XML-aware find and replace operations on selected files, folders, or even an entire project at one time. You can run case-sensitive searches on partial or whole words and even search using regular expressions.

Search results are displayed for each file with line and column numbers, and clicking on any individual search result opens the associated file with the search item highlighted.

The find-in-files window includes nine separate tabs, allowing you to perform multiple searches without losing your previous results. The window also supports copying results to the clipboard to document and communicate search data quickly and easily.

The replace functionality allows you to find and replace data in all specified files with a single click, saving hours of valuable time when working with multiple files or large projects.

Batch Operations

Once you have built your project, you can apply most commands to the entire project or to a selected group of files or folders, including:

• Check well-formedness
• Validate
• XSL transformation
• Generate Schema/DTD
• Find & replace
• Send email

The Project Properties dialog lets you specify different options for the various batch processing commands for each folder.

In addition, XMLSpy® 2008 includes a source control facility that lets you tie your project to a centralized version control or software configuration management (SCM) system, such as Microsoft Visual SourceSafe and compatible systems like CVS, PVCS, and StarTeam.
