XMLSpy Tools/Options FAQ

Tools/Options FAQ1

Tools/Options FAQ Answers

  • How do I add support for a new XML-based language?
You can create your own templates which will then appear in the "Create new document" dialog box when you select the File/New command.

Use MS Explorer or any other text editor to open one of the new.xxx template files in the ...\Template folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Altova\XMLSpy2006\Template). This file will act as the basis for your new XML template.
Make the necessary changes, declarations etc., to the new template file.
Use Save as... option to save the file using the convention, Anyname.XXX. Anyname is the name of your personal template (e.g. my-xml). .XXX is the extension it should appear under in the dialog box (e.g. .XML). You can enter any type of XML extension here (.vml, .math etc.!)
Select File/New to select your new XML template.
  • Why can't I copy/paste into a cell in the Enhanced Grid View?
It is only possible to copy into a cell if it has been double-clicked and the cursor is visible. If the cell is only highlighted the option to copy will not be available.
  • XMLSpy® 2008 shows some characters as rectangles . Why?
In order to show special characters you must make sure that the encoding of the document is correct as well as the font.
Although the encoding may be correct for the desired character it might not be displayed correctly by a particular font. Fonts can be set in Tools/Options /Grid fonts tab /Text fonts tab or /Schema fonts tab.
  • When editing in the Text View I always get a bunch of extra syntax between the opening and closing tag of an element? How do I stop this?
To get rid of this extra syntax uncheck all of the boxes in the Intelligent Editing area in Tools/Options/Editing tab.
  • How can I prevent XMLSpy® 2008 from prompting twice whether I am sure that I want to save a file, even though it is not valid?
It is possible to turn off the automatic validation for a file type that is validated against a DTD or Schema. This option is set in the Tools/Options/File types tab. Highlight the appropriate extension and then check the "Disable automatic validation" checkbox.
However, this option will not disable a check for well formedness. XMLSpy® 2008 will always check if a file is well formed and also prompt you twice as to whether you are sure that you want to save it.
  • XMLSpy® 2008 automatically formats my code if I switch to another view or save the file. How can I disable this?
You can set XMLSpy® 2008 not to format certain elements, attributes, etc. in your code. This can be done in Tools/Options/File tab by adding the desired element, attribute, etc. in the "No output formatting for:" box to the lower right.
  • How can I get rid of the <!--Edited with XMLSpy--> at the beginning of my document?
This "option" can only be disabled if you have a permanent license for XMLSpy® 2008. One can disable this function in Tools/Options/File tab.
  • I want to open a file in another program but every time I try to open this file type it is opened up in XMLSpy® 2008. How can I change this?
This can be changed by going to Tools/Options/File types tab, selecting the extension that you no longer want to be automatically opened by XMLSpy® 2008 and disabling the option "Use XMLSpy as default editor".
  • Why is the "use same for all" option in Text fonts disabled?
It is only possible to set one font for the whole Text View in the Tools/Options/Text fonts tab. However, it is possible to set colors for the Text View individually, by selecting the element, attribute, etc, in the left frame and selecting a color from the color palette in the Styles options.
  • Why is the Table toolbar button greyed out?
To use the Table view one must be in the Enhanced Grid View. The "Display as table" (F9) option is not available in other views.
  • One of my entry helper windows is hidden, how can I make it re-appear?
You need to select the Entry Helpers in the Window Menu. It is not sufficient to use the "All on/off" option, the "Entry Helpers" option must be selected.
  • In the text view my formatting is lost when I save, close and then reopen a file. How do I get my original formatting?
If you set the Default View to Text View, the formatting will not be lost when re-opening the file. When switching from the Text View to the Enhanced Grid View or Schema View and then back to the Text View, the original formatting can be restored by choosing the reload option.
  • The “Default encoding for new files” setting in the Tools | Options | Encoding dialog doesn’t seem to work for certain filetypes. Why is this?
The “Default encoding for new files” setting only works for files which do not have a template associated with them (and also for xsd files which are an exception to this rule). If a filetype has an existing template (which can be found in the Altova\XMLSpy2005\Template directory) this setting will not take effect, instead the encoding specified in the template will be used. If the file does not have a template associated with it then this setting will take effect.
