XSLT Designer

Altova StyleVision® 2012 is a graphical XSLT designer for creating stylesheets based on XML and XBRL sources.

XSLT is a key component in the family of XML technologies. Its primary role is to separate content from presentation on the Web and also in other formats such as RTF and Microsoft® Word 2007+. XSLT syntax can sometimes be overwhelmingly complex. Even experienced XSLT developers tend to rely on sophisticated XSLT editors and XSLT debuggers, like those available in XMLSpy, for entry-helpers, auto-completion, testing and troubleshooting, etc.

There are two versions of XSLT in use today - XSLT 1.0 and XSLT 2.0 - both of which are fully supported by StyleVision. The 2.0 version represents a significant upgrade, extending the language with features that increase productivity, improve code quality and reusability, and provide powerful new functions. Read about the benefits of XSLT 2.0 here.

XSLT Design

StyleVision offers some respite from the intricacies of end-to-end XML development. XSLT design is supported through a unique drag and drop design interface. You simply load your XML document - which can be an XML Schema, DTD, or inferred from a structured XML instance file - and an optional data file for viewing sample output. Next, you can drag nodes onto the design pane to dictate the underlying XSLT code and, ultimately, the styling of your output document(s).

The corresponding XSLT code for your design is automatically created behind the scenes and can be viewed or saved at any time.

Note StyleVision also offers an alternative design paradigm for those more accustomed to working with common desktop publishing applications. For more information, see the Electronic Forms Design page.

The StyleVision XSLT design interface provides advanced entry helper windows for viewing, editing, and assigning the style and layout properties of each element or document section in your design. Learn more about this functionality on the Stylesheet Design page.

To meet the specific rendering requirements of XBRL financial data, StyleVision includes an easy to use XBRL Table Wizard. Learn more about this feature on the XBRL Rendering page.

Re-use Existing XSLT

If you already have written XSLT code or have inherited a project where some of the work has already been done, you can easily use StyleVision's visual design interface to tweak, augment, or completely redesign HTML or PDF output. See our Re-use Existing XSLT page for more information on this feature.

Advanced Stylesheet Functions

Stylesheets designed in StyleVision support advanced functionality such as conditional templates, auto-calculations, business logic validation, and much more. Read more about advanced stylesheet functions.

Multi-channel Publishing

StyleVision's visual, drag-and-drop approach for XSLT design allows you to create standards-conformant XSLT 1.0/2.0 stylesheets for simultaneous output in RTF and Word 2007 or later - a process that can take hours when performed manually. StyleVision also generates XSL:FO for PDF output formatting, as well as an Authentic eForm.
