Flat File Mapping Tools from Altova
What are Flat Files?“Flat file” is a generic term for text file formats such as comma separated value (CSV), tab delimited, fixed width, etc. Flat file formats are supported by a wide array of legacy systems and popular enterprise applications because they can be used as an interoperable format for exchanging information between different applications, including databases. Flat file formats have proven invaluable for allowing users of disparate tools to share information. However, though they are supported by many applications, flat files generally require additional processing to be integrated seamlessly with common data formats such as XML and EDI. Flat File Data IntegrationMapForce enables you to integrate flat file data with other common data formats, with support for mapping flat files to and from any combination of XML, database, EDI, XBRL, and Web services data. You simply drag connecting lines to map between corresponding elements in your flat files and the other data format(s) you’re integrating. Then, MapForce executes the transformation so you can view and save the result. Or, to automate the conversion, MapForce generates Java, C++, or C# program code to transform data from the source(s) to conform to the target data model. Converting Flat Files to XMLIn addition to the XML and flat file conversion capabilities of MapForce for data integration, Altova XMLSpy® 2012 contains powerful data exchange functions that allow you to easily convert back and forth between text files and XML for XML and Web services application development. Parsing Flat FilesAltova MapForce® 2012 also includes the unique FlexText utility for parsing flat files to integrate legacy text files with XML, databases, EDI, Excel 2007+, XBRL, and other flat file data in data integration and Web services applications. The MapForce FlexText utility enables you to easily parse and convert text files, so that you can integrate this valuable legacy data with your current system(s). FlexText is an extremely versatile graphical utility for parsing text files and incorporating legacy data in mapping designs. With its easy-to-use GUI, you can insert an existing text file and extract the portions of the file you want to expose to the MapForce mapping interface. FlexText produces a template that is then loaded into MapForce, where individual items can be mapped to any combination of XML, database, flat file, EDI, Excel 2007+, XBRL, and Web services data. By saving the configuration you create in FlexText, you can reuse the same template for multiple text files in multiple mappings.
