Viewing XML Instances

The powerful schema management capabilities of Altova SchemaAgent include the ability to graphically visualize relationships between XML instance documents and all associated schemas, XSLT stylesheets, and MapForce mapping projects.

SchemaAgent allows you to connect to and display XML instance documents – and their connections to XML Schemas, XSLT files, and MapForce mapping projects – in the graphical design view. This allows for a comprehensive view of data connections and interdependencies even across your XML information architecture.

Viewing schemas and XML instances

To display an XML document and its relationships to other files, simply drag it from the SchemaAgent file explorer pane to the design pane. SchemaAgent then represents the instance as a graphical component with a red title bar. Below the title bar are details about the XML Schema that defines the document, any XSLT stylesheets associated with it, and the namespace(s) that are defined for the file.

Inserting related files

A right-click menu allows you to insert any linked, related, or directly related XSD, XSLT, MFD, and/or XML files onto the design pane, and associations between the files are indicated with color-coded lines that connect the graphical components.

Inserting related files

Once you have inserted the desired files in the SchemaAgent design pane, you can arrange them easily, manage and create relationships between XML Schemas and/or stylesheets, and then save your design for future reference. You can also export your design as an image file for communication with other team members and stake holders. And, since SchemaAgent represents relationships in a graphical manner, the designs facilitate communication of your organization’s information infrastructure with both technical and non-technical users.

Editing XML instances in XMLSpy

If you have Altova XMLSpy® 2008 installed, you can right click an XML instance displayed in the SchemaAgent® 2008 design pane to open it, view more details, and/or edit it in XMLSpy.

Note: You can also connect to SchemaAgent while working with the XMLSpy graphical XML Schema editor and have access to all schemas in the SchemaAgent server path as well as their components in the XMLSpy info windows and entry helpers. Learn more about XMLSpy / SchemaAgent integration.
