RSS is a standard for syndicating information updates from a Web site via a newsreader. All RSS feeds must conform to the XML 1.0 specification as published on the W3C Web site. Subscribers to an RSS feed can be updated whenever a Web site changes or adds information. RSS pushes news out to subscribers, rather than requiring a visit to the site to check for changes.

Other popular methods are to install a dedicated newsreader application that delivers RSS feeds from the Web sites you select, or use a Web-based newsreader such as Bloglines, My Yahoo!, or NewsIsFree that allow you to add RSS feeds to a personalized page. Dedicated newsreaders are available for a variety of platforms. Enter "RSS newsreader" into your favorite search engine to locate several options.

Most sites that offer RSS use the logo to indicate RSS feeds. Clicking the link will usually take you directly to a feed. If your favorite site does not include the logo on the home page but has a search feature, you can enter RSS in the search field.
