The menu bar contains the various application menus. The following conventions apply:
| • | If commands in a menu are not applicable, they are unavailable. |
| • | Some menu commands pop up a sub-menu with a list of additional options. Menu commands with sub-menus are indicated with a right-pointing arrowhead to the right of the command name. |
| • | Some menu commands pop up a dialog that prompts you for further information required to carry out the selected command. Such commands are indicated with an ellipsis (...) after the name of the command. |
| • | To access a menu command, click the menu name and then the command. If a sub-menu is indicated for a menu item, the submenu opens when you mouseover the menu item. Click the required sub-menu item. |
| • | A menu can be opened from the keyboard by pressing the appropriate key combination. The key combination for each menu is Alt+KEY, where KEY is the underlined letter in the menu name. For example, the key combination for the File menu is Alt+F. |
| • | A menu command (that is, a command in a menu) can be selected by sequentially selecting (i) the menu with its key combination (see previous point), and then (ii) the key combination for the specific command (Alt+KEY, where KEY is the underlined letter in the command name). For example, to open a file (File | Open), press Alt+F and then Alt+O. |
| • | Some menu commands can be selected directly by pressing a special shortcut key or key combination (Ctrl+KEY). Commands which have shortcuts associated with them are indicated with the shortcut key or key combination listed to the right of the command. For example, you can use the shortcut key combination Ctrl+N to create a new file; the shortcut key F2 to rename a file or folder in the Explorer window. |
The toolbar contains buttons that are shortcuts for commands found in the menus. The name of the command appears when you place your mouse pointer over the button. To execute the command, click the button.
Toolbar buttons are arranged in groups. When right-clicking into the toolbar, you can specify which toolbar groups are to be displayed. In the GUI, you can also drag toolbar groups to alternative locations by clicking and dragging a toolbar handle to the desired location.
