In the xslt recommendation, every attribute that takes an attribute
value template (or an xpath expression) is listed. possibly the quickest
thing to look at is the syntax summary at the start of each element eg
15.1 on analyze-string says

<xsl:analyze-string
  select = expression
  regex = { string }
  flags? = { string }>
  <!-- Content: (xsl:matching-substring?, xsl:non-matching-substring?, xsl:fallback*) -->
</xsl:analyze-string>


which tells you that the select attribute takes an xpath expression, but
the regex and flags attributes take AVT (marked as {string} in the
summary)
