I'm shocked that any XSLT processor should accept the nested templates
without complaint.

You want:

 	<xsl:apply-templates select="object">
 		<xsl:sort select="member[@name='idstring']/string"/>
 	</xsl:apply-templates>
 	</xsl:template>
