Re: [xsl] Optimization Question

If you are prepared to write some java wrapper you'll certainly be able
to re-use the parsed xml file and also most likely the compiled
stylesheet (certainly saxon can do that, I assume xalan is broadly
similar) Others can point you at the java needed (not really my thing,
java)

However theere are some parts of your stylesheet that look slower than
needed.

That // cauases a full search of the document to arbitrary depth. If you
know the explicit path then using that would probably be quicker.

On the other hand it isn't clear to me that you need that variable at
all.

You use it as

<xsl:variable name="group_full_name"
select="$all-groups[generate-id()
= generate-id(key ('all-groups-key', $crg))]" />

This looks up the nodes you want in the key, then searches the entire
all-groups list to find the first of those nodes.

It looks to be equivalent to

        <xsl:variable name="group_full_name" select="key('all-groups-key', $crg)[1]" />

which on the face of it ought to be much quicker as it is just a single
key lookup which the processor ought to optimise, that being the main
reason for having keys.
