it would be something like <xsl:for-each 
  select="document($nsindex/filename)/root/link | 
  document($nsindex/filename)/root/link | 
  document($nsindex/filename)/root/link


you don't want the /root/link bits as you just want the document nodes.
each bit you are unioning there is teh same but I assume that's just an
artifact of the cut down example.

if you have a file that contains the filenames
<x>
<y>a.xml</y>
<y>b.xml</y>
....


then you can just do select="document($file/x/y)" and load all thirty documents
in one go.
