In which version of RenderX ? Last time I looked it did not support it.

The way I understood it, RenderX would like to support this soon. It may use
a new version of its FO renderer to also allow a page to be split in several
areas (with a variable independent number of columns). At least, some
RenderX people suggested using this approach to handle in a more flexible
way the span property.
