The implementation of Higher Order Functions (HOF) in XSLT (1.0 or
2.0) would not have been possible if the namespace mechanism was not
available.

Libraries of useful HOFs in XSLT have been created (in particular
FXSL) and used for many years in solving a large variety of problems,
that seem on the edge of impossible without such a tool.
