When Sun took Xerces and integrated it into the JDK, they either took a very buggy version that IBM/Apache have since cleaned up, or they took a clean version and spent their time adding bugs. I suspect the latter, since the Sun JDK 5 version is much better than Sun JDK 6. Always use the Apache Xerces distribution in preference to the Sun JDK 6 distribution.
