Aren't there any general guidelines anywhere? Not that I'm aware of. Down to the group developing the ns based app/std? They apply, if the paperwork is right they get a mime type registered? Perhaps this is just an extension of the 'how to fix namespaces' issue since processing on namespace is not far from processing on mime type.
