I use error handling to determine whether the table node actually exists... but my current approach of just walking up from the row to the table obviously fails in the case where no row is present. Again, the assumption is that the XPath is valid from the root all the way down to the row (except that there might not be any rows) with error handling checking actual presense of row and table nodes. Yes, this is quite tricky, which is why I though I'd post to see if anyone had done something like this.
