This did it. <xsl:value-of select="/index/icon[@id = current()/@icons]/@path" /> works as I had intended it to work, <xsl:value-of select="/index/icon[@id = normalize-space(@icons]/@path" /> however, did not. I think, I failed to realize, that I had to switch context to make "normalize-space(@icons)" meaningful. So the "escape" I was looking for was in fact *current()*.
