The difference is probably caused by the different renderings modes Mozilla/Firefox has, quirks mode and standards compliant mode. The result of an XSLT transformation is always rendered in standards compliant mode I think and there an "r" is an "r". In quirks mode that font face stuff might work. The standards based solution is to use Unicode characters such as described in <http://www.answers.com/topic/check-mark> but obviously a font then needs to be on the system containing that character to allow an application to render it.
