The difference is probably caused by the different renderings modes 
Mozilla/Firefox has, quirks mode and standards compliant mode. The 
result of an XSLT transformation is always rendered in standards 
compliant mode I think and there an "r" is an "r". In quirks mode that 
font face stuff might work.

The standards based solution is to use Unicode characters such as 
described in <http://www.answers.com/topic/check-mark> but obviously a 
font then needs to be on the system containing that character to allow 
an application to render it. For me here on Windows XP with Office there 
is the font Arial Unicode MS installed so that I get to see the 
characters in that table at the above URL.
