Sorry Daniel without seeing more of the problem there is little I can think
of to help.

I'll just point out that as you've discovered an xsl:variable can't
reference or modify it self.

Also xsl:variables are a bit of a mis-nomer since their value once set in a
particular execution scope are immutable hence you can't do things like
myVar = myVar + 1.

I think the best next step is to distill your obviously complex requirement
to a more simple example of the issue you are having a problem with.
Perhaps then the answer will become clear and if not you could then post a
more complete example of the problem which we could help you with.  Once
armed with a simple example of a solution you could then apply it your more
complex real world requirement.
