I own the O'Reilly Cookbook and I would not recommend it until you are
quite advanced. In fact given my time over I would not have bought it.
It seems more esoteric than practical.

I'd say For Dummies followed by Tennison and supplemented with the FAQ
at www.dpawson.co.uk.
