I was able to limit my xsl:sort parameter to basic 3 variants in which
some variants contained other parameters. eg.
*[name()=$otherparamter].

Wanting to contain all xslt-code within the .xsl source I worked
around making 3 different <choose> cases for each xsl:sort variant !

Unfortunately xpath don't offer an eval() function like javascript. I
do see the beauty of xslt, however, some of these work arounds tend to
clutter the code and sometimes makes nonsense. eg. the lack of a
'replace string' function.

Thanks for reflecting on the issue though. I had it solved so far by
double-cheating the <xsl:sort> - still, I'm hoping a more generic
solution will turn up. Or that Xslt v.2 is pumping more steroids as we
speak ..
