perhaps adding <xsl:strip-space elements="*"/> after the output
tag would help.

Perhaps you also want to change

<xsl:output omit-xml-declaration="yes"/>

to

<xsl:output omit-xml-declaration="yes" method="text"
encoding="iso-8859-1"/>

Change the encoding to your liking.

I may not exactly understand what your output looks like and
what it should look like. Perhaps you can give an example for
both. The example in your original message looked just fine to
me.
