Mass edit of xml tags for Windows Media Files, MP3, etc.

I find it so painful to open the properties for each file individually and
change title, album, artist, etc.

Does anybody know a way to open all the xml tags for a set of media files at
once for edit? What would be awesome is if you could open (download?) the
tags in a database app, spreadsheet, or even text editor. You could then
make your changes -- like copy and paste an artist name to 25 lines instead
of typing it 25 times in separate Windows dialog boxes !!

I know this is technically possible, but has anybody ever done it?

Thanks!
