This is what I found: (don't know much about xml  ;>))

If you double click an XML file it opens in Internet explorer and shows each 
record vertically one after another with lots of indentation and lots of 
whitespace.

If you open in notepad same orientation but everything is squished 
together -no indents or extra space.

Opening in FrontPage the data is in one huge horizontal row. You can use the 
XML view toolbar to reformat the data to vertical like the IE view -indent 
and whitespace so you can see what you are working with.

So I cut a paste and save and now when I open in notepad those indents and 
whitespace are there making the file much bigger.
