Guidance for a beginner?

Hello all:

Working with Microsoft Access and Visual Basic for Applications, I've
created a freeware small library management system. I am trying to create a
module to download cataloguing MARC records from libraries via their Z39.50
servers. So far so good...

I need to pull apart/parse these MARC records and the consensus seems to be
that XML is the best route. I am not a programmer (just an enthusiast), and
I know nothing about XML - but, hey, I had to teach myself Visual Basic, I
can tackle something new... ;)

Here is a sample of the advice I've been given to give a sense of what I
need:

"If you are interested in using XML the key methods you will need to master
are the SelectNodes and SelectSingleNode methods of the XML object. The
input to these functions is an XML Xpath expression that identifies a single
or list of fields in the MARC XML record."

Given all of this, any books/websites/tutorials you might suggest? I've
visited the library and seen a plethora of books..

Cheers!
Fred Boer
