XML Notepad 2006

I'm new to this so I have a question.
I needed an XML editor and I found Microsoft's offering, XML Notepad 2006.
It seems to do everything that I need but it also does one thing that I don't
need! It seems to throw away any DTD that I have in the file.

Is there some way to configure the editor to preserve DTD, or is this
Microsoft's way of telling me that it's better to use XML-Schema in stead of
Is there some other editor that works better?

I'd really rather not go through the pain of learning XML schema if I can
avoid it.

Many thanks in anticipation
