Thanks Hardryv for your response. I'm glad I'm not the only one who
thinks it's strange.

I can load the node using selectNodeList rather than selectSingleNode,
though if I count the nodes in the resultant NodeList it contains only
1. Looping through each node in the nodelist (ie only the single node)
gives me the desired behavior -- this will work for now.

But, per your suggestion, if I instead change the nodeName to something
else ("Roi_Data_Time" is the actual nodeName) such as "NodeName" I am
able to load the node using selectSingleNode. Perhaps Roi_Data_Time is
too similar to other existing nodes? I still don't understand the
behavior.
