Spaces, Tabs, New lines are just collective know as whitespace. Hence anywhere that whitespace is valid a new line can appear. For example:- <longElement attrib1="hgjfkjfhggh" attrib2="hkjghjkhgkhgh" /> can also be represented as:- <longElement attrib1="hgjfkjfhggh" attrib2="hkjghjkhgkhgh" /> Hope this answers you question.
