XML per se retains all such white-space characters, I gather you convert
the document to HTML or XHTML (otherwise <pre> would have no effect), so
you are looking for a HTML-way of keeping those spaces. The best way to
do that would be <pre> in most cases. You don't like the formatting? No
problem, you can change it using style sheets, for example,
<xsl:template ...>
<pre style="color: red">
...
</pre>
</xsl:template>
This would cause the color of the text to be red. To learn more about
style sheets, have a look at http://www.w3.org/Style/CSS/learning to
find a good tutorial.
