Invalid Characters in XML Documents...

I have a series of XML documents with a related DTD file. Whether using =
the XMLTextReader .NET class or the Data-XML-Import option of an Office =
2003 application, I get the same error:

** Unhandled Exception: System.Xml.XmlException: The '1' character, =
hexadecimal value 0x31, cannot begin with a name. Line 114, position 44.

Here is line 114 from my xml file:

<fieldname>col_8_140 Dose Max (99.7%) <1900</fieldname>

Clearly, the 'less than' sign is creating problems. My problem is that =
there are more than 100 such lines in this XML file.

How do I go about parsing through or around these elements? I would =
prefer to do this using C# and the .NET framework. Any suggestions or =
links would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

VS
