Thanks Chris! That worked perfectly.  I wasn't thinking of JavaScript, I was simply referring to the "detailed" MSDN documentation for selectSingleNode..

Object. Returns the first node that matches the XSL or XPath query. If no nodes match the query, it returns Null

Now, wouldn't you assume that you could use IsNull() to see if the object returned Null?  I think that last sentence should read... If no nodes match the query, it returns Nothing. It certainly would have saved me a lot of headaches
