I've been able to programmatically put data in an Excel spreadsheet in 
some simple case, without looking at the internal format documentation. 
Just manually creating a typical template sheet instance in Excel, 
exporting it as XML, and looking at the exported code. Then patching the 
table of cells with the externally provided data. A couple of issues:

- The data cells need not be contiguous, i.e. some cells may not exist 
in the initial template (in the middle of a row), and must be created 
when needed.
- The row count and the max cell count (max row length) must be 
explicitly declared in the XML markup in some predefined place. 
otherwise Excel refuses to open the spreadseet.
