Xalan does not do XSLT 2.0 so if you want to use XSLT 2.0 then try Saxon (http://saxon.sourceforge.net/) or Gestalt (http://gestalt.sourceforge.net/) or AltovaXML (http://www.altova.com/altovaxml.html).
