Data Editing

DatabaseSpy® 2008 allows users to edit the content of database tables in an interactive preview window.

Information stored in relational databases is rarely static. Existing records are updated or removed, and new information is added to keep the database up to date and accurate, maintaining business value. DatabaseSpy® 2008 offers convenient tools to edit database table content. You can begin by selecting any table in the Online Browser window and choosing Edit Data from the right-click context menu.

If you’re examining a database table through a SQL select statement, you can click the Execute for Edit button in the SQL Editor window to redisplay a table with editing enabled.

The Edit icon appears in the status bar below the results table. You can then click any table cell and interactively update the contents. When you press Enter to complete the edit, the cell is highlighted in light red to indicate changed data. As you continue editing, all the changed cells remain highlighted.

Editing helpers are available in the Results window toolbar. You can search within the table, maximize the window view, append a new table row, delete a row, and more.

The DatabaseSpy® 2008 Data Inspector Window is a helpful option to display long entries in individual cells. The Save button in the Data Inspector Window lets you save the data from any cell in an external file.

The Data Inspector Window displays XML content with color coding. You can even turn on word-wrap and resize the Data Inspector Window for a better view.

Additionally, XML data can be edited offline with XMLSpy® 2008, the industry-leading development environment for all XML-related technologies. The updated external file is easily replaced in the database.

Not all database tables and columns can be edited, due to restrictions on keys and indexes as well as variations in database vendors’ client modules. A DatabaseSpy® 2008 dialog window indicates issues that may prevent editing a table.

As you edit database content, DatabaseSpy® 2008 limits interaction with the database. When all your changes are complete, you can review your edits in the highlighted cells, then easily commit them all at once using the Commit button in the Results window toolbar.

To the left of Commit, the Undo button lets you cancel all your edits, restoring the original data in the Result window.
